Amy Ponce was born and raised in the Bronx by Puerto Rican parents. At the age of nineteen she took her first black and white photography class and instantly connected with the medium. Her first project focused on the South Bronx and the neighborhoods that were neglected and left like ghost towns after being set aflame by greedy “slumlords” in the 70's and 80's. This body of work gained her acceptance at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where she received her B.F.A. in Photography in 1996.

In 2003, a new body of work emerged that documented and celebrated Puerto Rican culture in New York City. A particular emphasis was placed on a new generation of Boricuas that were keeping the traditional music of Puerto Rico, Africa and the Caribbean alive in the city. The images captured on black and white film conveyed the spirit of a people united by their passion for their Island’s art and history.

Amy lives and works out of her studio in Inwood, Manhattan and is currently freelancing.
