Amy Majagua’naru Ponce
Amy Ponce is a multi-disciplinary artist born in the Bronx, NY to Borikua (Puerto Rican) parents. She currently lives and works out of her studio in Inwood, Manhattan. She received her BFA in Photography from the School of Visual Arts in 1996.
Amy aka AIMZ is a back up vocalist and artist for the group Abrazos Army. And has performed with the Taino Cultural Group Kasibahagua.
Through her self-portraits, narratives, mixed media work and now song. Amy has been vividly portraying and documenting her Boricua/Taino and Nuyorican roots-from it’s music, spirituality and fight for social justice. “What good is my talent if it does not help to elevate my people” she says.
In 2005, Amy presented her first one-woman exhibition of traditional black and white photographs entitled “Ecos de Vida! Echoes of Life! At the Gordon Parks Gallery at the College of New Rochelle in the Bronx- vibrant images that captured the music, art and life of the Caribbean in the city.
A new body of work emerged in 2010 entitled “Ancestral Footsteps”, based on her exploration of her Borikua/Taino ancestry and participation in the Peace and Dignity Journeys Route of the Red Tail Hawk, an indigenous run that joins Native American tribes from North, Central, South America and the Caribbean.
Amy’s work was honored and included in the 2007 Bronx Hispanic Arts Festival and the 2008 & 2014 Bronx Latin American Art Biennial. In 2012 she was honored as Photographer of the Year at the Taino Award’s at the Bronx Museum.
